About
Ax is Google's declarative runtime for orchestrating agent workloads, built like Kubernetes for agents: you declare what you want with apply, then inspect it with get, describe, and watch. Agents run in sandboxed workspaces with network fencing, so untrusted code stays contained. It is Apache 2.0 open source and self-hosted, which makes it a solid foundation if you are running agents beyond one-off experiments.
Details
Open source. You run it yourself.
Auth: Open source (Apache 2.0)
Rate limit: Self-hosted open source: no API limits; bounded by your own infrastructure.

Best for: developer automation
Setup
- Clone the ax repo and follow the quickstart to install the CLI.
- Write a YAML manifest describing your agent workload.
- Run ax apply to launch it in a sandboxed workspace.
- Use ax get and ax watch to monitor runs.
- Tighten network fencing rules before pointing it at untrusted tasks.
Example
ax apply -f my-agent.yamlUse cases
- Run scheduled agent jobs with a kubectl-style control plane
- Sandbox untrusted agent code with network fencing
- Manage fleets of agents declaratively from YAML
