About
OpenTopoData is a free, open-source elevation API and a drop-in alternative to Google's elevation service. Give it latitude and longitude coordinates and it returns the ground height from public datasets like SRTM and NASA's ASTER. The public API is free with no key, and you can self-host it for unlimited use.
