About

Textbelt is a dead-simple service for sending SMS text messages with one plain web request: just a phone number and a message. The project is open source, so you can host it yourself for free forever. Textbelt.com also runs a paid version, and the free tier on their hosted service is very limited (about one free text per day), so the sweet spot is either light testing or the self-hosted version.

Setup

  1. For a quick free test, send the sample request from the docs with your phone number
  2. Check that the text arrives and that the response says {"success":true}
  3. If you need more volume, create a paid key on textbelt.com or host the open-source version yourself
  4. For the free option, install the textbelt server on your own computer or VPS
  5. Point your scripts at your own server's /text address and you're done
