FoodData Central is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's official food database, with detailed nutrition info for over a million branded, packaged, and raw foods. You can search foods by name and get back calories, protein, carbs, fat, vitamins, minerals, and ingredients. It is the same data behind official U.S. nutrition labels, and it is completely free to use.

Setup

  1. Go to the signup page and enter your email to request a free API key (no credit card needed).
  2. Copy the key from the confirmation email they send you.
  3. Paste the example URL into your browser, replacing DEMO_KEY with your own key, to see it work.
  4. In an app, include your key as the api_key parameter with every request.
